There's some drama re #GlobalSwitchDay and #fosdem. Where should we be telling #WhatsApp users to switch to?

#matrix or #signal or #xmpp or #SimpleX or somewhere else? I'm not a super geek but I really don't like centralization. Matrix works great for me. it lets me take "live calls" on my podcast/stream. and set up rooms/groups. IDK. It's hard enough to get normies to join us here but especially if we don't agree on where to go. ugh.

Kewl? Where do I get functional XMPP gateways to #WhatsApp and #Matrix (and no purple-matrix doesn’t count, it doesn’t work)? What is the technology good for when nobody I care about is there?

(hint: I spent many years helping #XMPP technology up to studying #Erlang to make #Ejabberd to work with Kerberos before I gave up)

Great to see @distrowatch make the leap to the #Fediverse.

Always remember that when you use #Facebook, #Instagram, #Threads or #WhatsApp, you are always at the mercy of #Meta.

You may have built an audience there but they own it.

Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.

You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.

I've seen a lot of people talking about leaving #WhatsApp. Great!

Only, don't replace one WhatsApp with another.

#Signal and #Threema are centralized services, and just as vulnerable to #enshittification as Twitter or WA.

Instead, use a platform that's standardized and federated - #XMPP, a.k.a. #Jabber.

The easiest way to use it is to install #Quicksy from the Play Store, App Store, or F-Droid.

Io escluderei #Signal per molte delle stesse ragioni per cui non uso #Telegram o #WhatsApp.

Non basta che una piattaforma di comunicazione sia #OpenSource per essere affidabile, deve essere come minimo amministrabile completamente in proprio, meglio se effettivamente decentralizzata e federabile/federata.
