snac.sabatino.social is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.

This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

poddery.com is a public and services (we used to provide as well, but it is scheduled to be shut down soon). This service is run by volunteers and we raise funds through donations. Would you like to sponsor part of domain renewal charges for 1 year?

gandi.net hiked charges 2-3 times! and it is 29.39 USD (so we moved to Hetzner.de which charges 13.5 Euro for 1 year only - we already host the server with them). @milvus_migrans_govinda already contributed half of it.

Pirate Praveen »
@praveen@social.masto.host

@sajith @kannan @badrihippo @badri @ravi @slimmilan @buster Thanks Sajith for the donation! This should cover ~3 months hosting charges.

Since we have to pay 36.8 Euro per month, more donations from others still welcome so we are in a good position for upcoming months as well.

For people who are new, poddery.com offers and services maintained by a community for the public.

@sajith @kannan @badrihippo @badri @ravi @slimmilan @buster is heavier than so diasp.in is much cheaper than poddery.com after matrix was shutdown (36 euro vs 15 euro - durare.org is even cheaper 5 euro). For , if you clean up old media cache or history, it could be cheaper.

Ma mère a SiskinIM sur son iPhone, et à priori, il ne marche pas très bien.  Est-ce que certain·e·s parmi vous uilisent Monal au quotidien? Juste pour savoir si ça vaut le coup de lui faire changer.

Over the next weeks & months I plan to move the users on xmpp.social over from standalone database backend towards LDAP backend.
This will open the domain to offer more services like mail and (maybe) Mastodon with one single account.

Also I plan to bring the domain I bought from another fedi user last year (or so) into action: fedisocial.de

The phone number requirement is only one of three reasons, why I can't use Signal.

2ⁿᵈ: A centralised service in the Amazon cloud doesn't meet my need for .

3ʳᵈ: Lack of first class client for my OS ( on desktop and mobile). I don't use Android or iOS.

For those who want a WA-like experience, I recommend : quicksy.im/

maple »
@maple@hear-me.social

@solderandchaos Exactly. Someone needs to get this across to all those people pushing as a better solution. It just isn't for 99% of users. I'm glad it exists but it is NOT an equivalent to those other platforms, not yet anyway. And offers both the privacy and the ease of use.

If Signal would only stop asking people for a phone number at signup, it would be perfect. A LOT of people just refuse to use a platform if they are required to give a phone number.

I'm not sure, if replacing one centralised, walled gardens with another one, is the way to go.

As we are here on the , we all know about the federated service provide to users, organisations and countries.

There are various federated and free systems around. E.g. I use / since even before Signal has been created.

Over a year ago, I wrote ”A month using XMPP (using Snikket) for every call and chat”.

For something like 15 months now, Sandra and I have used XMPP via @snikket_im for probably 99.9% of our calls, messages, and video chats, running on an Intel NUC.

We both use the Snikket mobile app, and I also use @dino and @profanity in Linux.

Anybody having experience running a messaging service based on or for approx. 1000 users?

I did deploy a (matrix) test install but was not impressed. Especially the federation feature consumed a lot of resources and the client experience was rather disappointing. Joining large rooms took ages even with the latest "fast room join" MSCs. Anybody having better luck with an XMPP deployment?

Part 2 – self-host – A video and audio calls alternative with XMPP/Jabber

In the previous blog post (posted 6 January 2025) I’ve talked about the easiest way of having video- and audio-calls without self-hosting. In this post let’s look at one way to self-host an XMPP server for audio and video calls.

Warning : self-hosting services is not for the faint of heart. If you’ve never done this before, I’d suggest to first do some generic reading on self-hosting or maybe ask here or here.

The perhaps easiest way to self-host an XMPP server that can do video- and audio-calls is to use Snikket.

What is needed for this from you as the admin that will self-host ?

It’s been a while since I tested self-hosting Snikket but I remember that it was a matter of installing Snikket on a server, then log in to the web interface for the admin user, and then create invites for the users you want to have on-board.

After the user receives an invite they will be asked to install the Snikket app on their Android phone (The Snikket app is a soft-fork of the Conversations app. Note that -afair- installing the Snikket app is not a must. If you know your way around you can stick with the Conversations app) and continue to start using their Snikket user account on your server. And then starting an audio- or video call should be the same as in the previous blog post (posted 6 January 2025).

I’d also like to share some information for people with more experience with self-hosting. This could be difficult but perhaps not impossible 😉

Yunohost (link to their app catalog) is software made by a group of volunteers (Mainly in France it appears) that makes self-hosting easier. After a fresh installation you would be ready to install “apps” from the Yunohost apps catalog.

Some users have asked for the feature that the XMPP software that comes with Yunohost (Metronome) can also do video- and audio-calls. In this Github issue (from May 2020) some users claim that they got it working by changing some settings.

Note, if you scroll down to the last comment you can probably see that someone commented that Metronome has become an app instead of coming with a default Yunohost installation.

Happy chatting 🙂

If you’re an XMPP developer or spec author and weren’t planning to attend, I’d strongly encourage you to reconsider

For those who can’t make it to Brussels but will be in Berlin on Wednesday, February 12th, we’ll be discussing the Summit at that week’s XMPP Meetup

Moving from one centralized system to another one does not sound right.

As an cititzen, I want both on state level and personally. If I can't run my own server or decide who does it run for me, and where, it's not an option.

@tobykurien Excellent! That would be wonderful to have a phone. I use for phone calls so I can use any operating system. People talk about a privacy respecting phone system, well it doesn't get anymore private or anonymous than using BSD for texts and calling.

I don't mean anonymous calls, I meant a phone OS that is controlled by the user, down to the kernel level.

Government organizations (also political parties, NGOs, etc.) should choose a platform, that they control themselves, i.e. instead of !

xmpp-it@conference.xmpp-it.net

Info su come registrare un nuovo account XMPP a questo indirizzo:

Abbiamo anche un Git per condividere, creare e sviluppare software, configurazioni e documenti riguardanti il protocollo XMPP. Trovate il nostro Git qui:
