It is actually harmful to say that Mastodon has no algorithms because:
- It’s not true
- That belief is contradictory to how computer science works
- It leads to an idea that algorithms are evil
- Pushes a neo-Luddite belief that development of algorithms is morally wrong
- Ultimately undermines confidence in Mastodon when people realize that, not only does Mastodon have algorithms, you can change them
When talking about Mastodon, we can do so much better than spread a myth that’s obviously untrue.

@atomicpoet Seems like we're going to need a new word that means "algorithm which is an impenetrable black box written by corporations to serve their interests rather than yours" and unless we coin that word quick people are just gonna overload the word "algorithm" for it.

What I'm looking for is a way to know that a social media platform is not being used by a corporate or governmental entity (or really, any large centralized entity) to manipulate me and my community as a way of benefitting only those entities and nobody else.
As long as that is the core issue of the conversation, I don't care all that much what particular vocabulary people are using.

I had a reply girl show up in my comments, lecturing me about how I use “Mastodon” – telling me that “Mastodon has no algorithm” and that I “choose” to see everything in my feed. Everything she said was wrong:
- Nobody chooses what shows up in their feed
- I don’t use Mastodon
- Even if I did, Mastodon has algorithms
Here’s the other thing: to a whole lot of people “Mastodon” is the colloquial term for the Fediverse. Is that true just because the word “Mastodon” has a colloquial use? Certainly not.
And it’s fucking clear as day that some people who are Mastodon fans have no clue how all this works, yet still feel qualified to lecture me about it.

At any moment, your admin has the power to filter posts from your chronological feed—and they often do.
Even without an admin, people decide to write unlisted and “followers only” posts—which fundamentally changes what appears in your feed.
None of this is straightforward.
Mastodon has an algorithm. The way people use the word “algorithm” here is both inaccurate and harmful.

Negli ultimi giorni ho riflettuto molto sulla questione europea e di come l'#UE dovrebbe evolversi fino a diventare un unico stato federale, dotato di una sola politica estera, un solo #esercito autosufficiente e un sistema democratico con un'equa rappresentanza delle nazioni e dei cittadini e con un sistema di controllo della democrazia parlamentare basato sulla democrazia diretta. Penso anche che una volta dotato del suo esercito l'#Europa dovrebbe uscire dalla #NATO e diventare neutrale.

Eheh, mi rendo anche conto che è strano pensare al futuro dell'Europa da cittadino extracomunitario, poiché svizzero e dunque non facente parte dell'UE. Tuttavia è forse anche per questo motivo che la mia idea di Europa del futuro è praticamente identica a quello che è oggi la Svizzera stessa: una federazione di 26 piccoli stati indipendenti, multiculturale, democratico, armato e neutrale. Onestamente non vedo perché un modello del genere non potrebbe funzionare per l'Europa intera.

Ho una sindrome autoimmune che mi obbliga ad un farmaco. Fino ad oggi mi bastava inviare mensilmente la mail al medico di famiglia per ottenere la prescrizione.
Dalla prossima settimana, invece, sono obbligato o a presentarmi dal medico in studio oppure ad installare una app che già mi sta sul cazzo, dato che mi ha chiesto il consenso a dargli anche una fetta di culo.
Prima, con il dottore che non rispettava il GDPR e con la mail, sentivo di avere un problema tutt'al più da 6, 6½.
Adesso ho una app che raccoglierà tutte le mie richieste, le ricette e i referti, tiene i dati su AWS assieme ad altre decine di milioni di utenti (copre anche Francia e Germania), gestiti da una srl di Milano, con sede in Francia. Cosa potrebbe mai andare storto? Ora sì che sento di avere un problema da 10.

And you know what? They might be right. Maybe today is the day the bubble bursts, NVIDIA’s stock crashes, OpenAI becomes a relic of the past, and Microsoft has to lay off a bunch of workers because AI is done. Apparently, this Chinese company—the one that made DeepSeek with just a few million dollars—is triggering the AI apocalypse.
Here’s the thing: I’ve seen this story before. Every time there’s a big downturn, people panic. Bears come out of the woodwork to say, “I told you so.” But long term, things tend to stabilize and stocks go back up. I’m not saying recessions don’t happen—they do. I’ve lived through a few myself: the dot-com crash of 2000, the Great Recession of 2007, the COVID-triggered downturn five years ago, and 2022, which was an incredibly hard year for me.
But if you look at the long-term trend, betting on stocks falling indefinitely is a bad call. Historically, the stock market averages about 10% growth year over year. Sure, some years you get 20–30% gains, and others you see 20–40% losses. But when you smooth it out over the long haul, it’s been 10% growth for a century.
Now, back to DeepSeek. For years, I’ve been saying AI is bound to get more efficient—it has to. That’s just how computing works. 80 years ago, computers ran on vacuum tubes. Now, the computing power of those room-sized machines fits on a nanometer, or even smaller. Computing used to be massively resource-intensive, but over time, we’ve learned to do more with less. The same will happen with AI.
It’s a bad bet to think AI-driven data servers will expand indefinitely, requiring more energy until we’re building nuclear reactors to power them. That doesn’t make sense. At some point, you hit diminishing returns. People have been warning about this for years.
Take audio as an example. We hit the peak of audio reproduction decades ago with the CD, introduced in 1982. The Red Book standard defined it, and since then, every so-called improvement has been marginal. Sure, we’ve had SACDs, DVD audio, Blu-ray audio—but none of them caught on because the benefits over CDs were nominal. Yes, SACDs can do surround sound, but even CDs can handle that, just not as well. It all comes back to diminishing returns. Audio didn’t get better—it just got more convenient. In fact, in some ways, it got worse. Spotify, for example, has a lower bitrate than CDs. But streaming is more accessible, so people trade quality for convenience.
The same principle applies to AI. We’ve already had the big breakthrough: machine learning. We can take a low-resolution video in 240p and upscale it to 4K. We can translate languages in real-time. That’s the breakthrough. Everything from here on out is incremental improvement. It’s not about building massive data centers and boiling oceans to keep them running. It’s about making AI more cost-effective and efficient.
If the reports about DeepSeek are true—that they pulled this off with $5 million and without the latest NVIDIA chips—then the hundreds of billions spent on AI over the past two years have been massively inefficient. Is that bad news for NVIDIA or OpenAI? Maybe.
But it also means we’re heading toward cheaper, more efficient AI. The next big leap isn’t going to be massive data centers; it’ll be resource-efficient AI running on smartphones and embedded systems. Imagine AI on a $30 Raspberry Pi. That’s the future.
The real fear in the stock market isn’t that the AI bubble has burst—it’s that AI has advanced so quickly that much of what’s been built is already obsolete. That’s bad news for investors but great news for builders who couldn’t previously afford a data center’s worth of compute power.
Now, think big picture. With AI built into your smartphone, you could shoot a video, edit it in minutes, and make quick changes on the fly. Tasks that took hours are now done in moments. And all this hype about AGI or the industrial revolution of AI, where jobs disappear and humans are replaced? It’s just that—hype. The tech industry does this every few years. They promise the moon, there’s a breakthrough, and then the improvements become incremental, like with the CD.
Does this mean the tech industry will collapse if investments in AI don’t pay off? No. The tech industry is already hyping the next big thing—robotics.

La cosa assurda di Signal (famosa app di messaggistica per la privacy) è che se tolgo micro g (sostituito dei google play services che ho su Calyxos) non funziona. Funziona tutto, pure WhatsApp, ma non Signal. Lo trovo un fatto veramente ridicolo. Ci sono dei fork come Molly-Foss che vanno senza i google play services anche se in questo momento non riesco a installarlo. Però è il principio che mi irrita: vuoi fare l'app mainstream più sicura per la privacy e ti leghi mani e piedi a Google?
